Traffic Flows Better in Hønefoss – Smart Technology Makes the Difference
SWARCO Norway continuously works to create smarter, more sustainable cities through our Smart Green portfolio. The portfolio includes innovative solutions to improve traffic flow and reduce emissions.
One of the latest implementations in this portfolio is the Smart Corridor in Hønefoss. Ringerikes Blad has reported significant interest from residents in the solution due to the considerable improvement in traffic flow since its implementation.
Noticeable Improvement for Residents in Hønefoss
Residents in Hønefoss have noticed a clear improvement in traffic flow since SWARCO's Smart Corridor solution was implemented. According to an article in Ringerikes Blad the traffic lights in the city have started to "communicate with each other," resulting in fewer unnecessary stops, reduced congestion, and smoother traffic flow.
Smart Corridor is part of SWARCO's SmartGreen portfolio and connects multiple traffic lights in a network. The system adjusts signals in real-time based on actual traffic, providing better flow for private cars, public transport, and pedestrians.
The results in Hønefoss show that this type of technology can significantly reduce both travel time and environmental impact. This is an important step towards smarter and more sustainable cities.

But what exactly does Smart Corridor entail, and how does it affect traffic in practice? We spoke with Rune Sørensen, traffic engineer at SWARCO and project manager for Smart Corridor in Hønefoss.
What is Smart Corridor, and how does it differ from traditional traffic management systems?
"Smart Corridor involves connecting multiple traffic lights so they can communicate with each other in real-time. Traditional traffic management systems often operate in isolation, but with Smart Corridor, we get a holistic approach to traffic management," explains Rune Sørensen.
"Using advanced algorithms and real-time data, the system can optimize green phases, reduce unnecessary stops, and improve flow for private cars, public transport, and pedestrians. This not only provides a better traffic experience but also contributes to lower emissions and better air quality."
How has this affected traffic in cities where Smart Corridor has been implemented?
"A good example is Hønefoss, where Smart Corridor has been in operation for a while. Residents have indeed noticed a clear improvement in traffic flow. As Ringerikes Blad recently wrote, many experience that the traffic lights now 'talk to each other,' and that traffic flows more naturally through the city," says Sørensen.
"It's about reducing unnecessary stops and congestion. When vehicles don't have to stop and start all the time, traffic becomes both more environmentally friendly and less stressful for drivers."
SWARCO – Leading in Intelligent Traffic Optimization
Smart Corridor is part of SWARCO's comprehensive strategy for smarter traffic management. "Our goal is to create more sustainable cities where traffic flows seamlessly. With Smart Corridor and our other solutions in the SmartGreen portfolio, we are well on our way to realizing this vision," concludes Sørensen.
