SWARCO UK & Ireland’s robust and reliable Prism signs achieve TOPAS 2517C approval

SWARCO UK & Ireland, the UK’s leading intelligent traffic solution and technology business, has become the first UK manufacturer to achieve the Traffic Open Products and Specifications (TOPAS) 2517C performance standard for its robust and reliable Prism signs.

TOPAS 2517C outlines the latest required performance function and specification for electromechanical Variable Message Signs (VMS). Following technical submission and assessment, SWARCO’s Prism signs achieved full TOPAS 2517C approval, meeting all necessary criteria.

SWARCO’s Prism signs, already deployed at thousands of sites across the world, are an effective way to display multiple limited messages in exactly the same format as a standard highway plate sign. The highly flexible signs, available with multiple control options and interfaces, can be designed to suit any customer requirements for urban or interurban applications, such as warning of diversion routes or road closures, semi-permanent pedestrian zones or where pre-set messages are needed to alternate. The robust signs are specifically designed to withstand harsh or adverse weather conditions and can be equipped with a de-icing feature that prevents them from seizing up during winter months. The technology is particularly suited to off grid use as they require minimal power, and can also be supplied without motors and control equipment for manual only applications.

John Pickworth, Managing Director at SWARCO UK & Ireland, says achieving TOPAS approval reaffirms SWARCO’s commitment to providing customers with the highest quality solutions: “While TOPAS is not legally mandated, its adoption is increasingly widespread across both local authorities and national bodies, such as the Department for Transport (DfT) and National Highways, who require products and solutions that meet the necessary technical requirements.

“At SWARCO, we are committed to the development and delivery of the highest quality ITS solutions, and that includes TOPAS compliance. We’re proud to be the first UK manufacturer to achieve the latest 2517C performance standard for our robust, reliable and highly versatile Prism signs.”
