SWARCO to revolutionize Cyprus' main road network

A significant milestone for Cyprus' transportation future has been marked. A contract for the implementation of an intelligent transport systems (ITS) on the island's main road network has been signed. The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works made the announcement, highlighting ITS's transformative potential for the country's infrastructure.

The Ministry emphasized the proven benefits of ITS, citing a 10% increase in road network capacity, a 20% reduction in travel time, and a 15% decrease in the number of accidents. These improvements showcase the power of advanced traffic management technologies in enhancing road safety and efficiency.

The contract was signed by Eleftherios Eleftheriou, Director of the Department of Public Works for the Republic of Cyprus, and Costas Costas Louka, Director of Ebas, representing the Ebas Swarco Consortium. Alexis Vafeades, Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, attended the ceremony, underscoring the government's commitment to this initiative.

Under the agreement, titled "Supply, installation, integration with national mobility platform of public works department and maintenance of its hardware equipment for Cyprus digital twin," the project will involve a €4.9 million investment. The contract stipulates a 24-month timeline for implementing all equipment and a subsequent 6-year maintenance period.

The newly signed contract will expand ITS to cover the main road networks of all towns in Cyprus and facilitate the creation of a centralized traffic management coordination center. Funded by the Recovery and Resilience Fund, the project includes the supply, installation, and maintenance of equipment for the traffic management center, 40 electronic variable message signs, 180 traffic counters, and 170 traffic monitoring cameras.

Fabrizio Biora, Swarco Bid Manager: “The implementation of these cutting-edge systems positions Cyprus to set a benchmark in road safety and efficiency, paving the way for a smarter and more connected future. We, SWARCO, are proud to lead this transformative project, bringing innovative solutions to improve the lives of Cypriot citizens.”

Firas Attieh, Swarco Regional Manager Middle East & Africa: “It’s a new milestone for Swarco in the Republic of Cyprus to expand its installed base and work closer with the PWD to enhance and improve the efficiency of mobility and transport in Cyprus. We at Swarco are excited to be part of it and proud to be the provider of the national platform Omnia.”.
